Nice to meet you!

For those who haven’t had the chance to come by for a visit, my name is Eve Silverman and I am very happy to take on the position of Leasing Manager at The Poppy Residences. How wonderful to be in the company of those seniors that call The Poppy their home. They are an inspiration to me in every way, from their wit, to their energy, but mostly I admire their attitude on life.

I am excited about introducing this lifestyle to potential residents. Having worked with the aging population for a few years, I believe that socialization is one of the keys to well being.

Independent living is a fabulous concept. In this environment, one has the choice of privacy, and can compliment that with activities and neighborhood all under one roof. Not having to take care of maintaining a large residence, preparing meals plus having the sense of security knowing you are not alone is of prime importance to an older individual.

If you are reading this blog and want to know more about what Independent Living is all about, please give me a call. I am always happy to sit down with you and discuss your needs and see if you want to make The Poppy Residence your new home. I’m reachable at 604.568.5563, and just ask for Eve.

I am also excited to announce “Poppy Talk” which will be a seminar held on the first Sunday of the month, open to the public and held in our Recreaction Building. These seminars will be informational sessions for seniors and their families on a variety of subjects of interest. I encourage you to attend our first one, held on Sunday February 6th from 1:30pm to 3:00pm. If you have any questions, or would like to see our Display Home and Guest Suite at The Poppy, please find me after the seminar. I would love to meet you.

Looking forward to meeting you all, and please come for a visit at The Poppy. You’ll find me in the Leasing Office every day but Thursday. But, if Thursday is the only day you can come by for a tour, Elise Sangster will be happy to meet with you and take you to see what life can be like at The Poppy.

Sincerely,

Eve Silverman
Leasing Manager

Community Living vs. Living Alone

In a recent article by Anya Martin of the Vancouver Sun she quoted a 2006 Danish study of 138,000 adults showing that living alone for women older than 60 and men over 50 doubled the chance of contracting or dying of heart disease. The study results revealed that those living alone are more prone to developing unhealthy habits that increase their risk of serious illness compared to those who live with others.

Another interesting study by the US Census Bureau points out that the number of people living alone has grown from 7% in the 1950’s to more than 27% in 2010. As these reports indicate, not every solo dweller has unhealthy habits. However, people living alone do have higher risks of cardiovascular problems. It is not that they don’t have someone to watch over them it is just they are more prone to unhealthy activities such as smoking and poor dietary habits.

Those are just a few of the reasons that make independent living communities like The Poppy Residences are such good value for those living here. They live in an environment that provides better and more regular meals as well as more activities within an active community.

And mostly, independent living provides a community of peers, everyday, at every meal and at every activity all the while providing each individual a beautiful home and as required, a place of solitude.

Private and group tours are available everyday, Monday thru Sunday, 9AM – 5PM.

You Don’t have to be alone!

In the last few days I have had several people tour The Poppy Residences and all have made the same comment “I just wanted to see the suites in case I get sick or have a stroke.” To which I have to point out, we are an independent living property, so our residents are for the most part quite healthy. If you get sick you have to go into care or assisted living at the very least, not here.

When I ask where they live the answers very, but most come down to, on my own or with my children. This statement is generally followed by, “But I do get out quite a bit and I do see people.” One just has to look out the window too see people, on the other hand our residents see friends everyday, which is a much healthier way to live.

Our residents have a built in peer group to commiserate with, enjoy activities with, go places with, see movies with and experience a broader, more involved way of life with. And “with” is much more inclusive way of life than “I.”

Having people to mingle with and share with is a much healthier way of life. Sharing a meal with someone allows better digestion than eating alone, which in turn makes the meal healthier. We absorb the nutrients better. And as our doctors tell us, as we age nutrition becomes more important, not less important. Conversation makes the meal more enjoyable meaning we are less likely to ignore having breakfast, lunch or dinner. This is especially true when we don’t have to cook it.

These are just some of the benefits of not living alone. So don’t wait, it is such a waste of life, your life. And to coin a phrase “He or she who hesitates is lost.” Don’t be lost, you can find a great life at The Poppy Residences.

See you soon,

David Hutchison, Leasing Manager

What do you really Need?

Not the most subtle question in the world, but one I need to know and so do you.  As the leasing manager I need to know your needs to provide you with the home you most desire. I often find elders somewhat reluctant to ask questions or answer them while touring as if they find the process to personal. The truth is; questions and answers are how we work best.

What kind of home are you looking for? When do you plan to move? Have you a set budget? What is the most important service you require? Do you have any diet restrictions? There are no questions that should be left unanswered.

You need to know and so do I. The transfer of information is what makes it all work. They get you the best home under the best possible circumstance.

At The Poppy Residences we have lovely, comfortable and livable homes. Our suites are mostly made up of one bedroom homes in various sizes and shapes. Some suites have balconies, some have very large decks and some don’t have either, but with some question and answer time, I’m sure we have just the one for you.

So, as you tour, ask all the questions, never doubting that we have the answers, because we do. We are in the service business and answering questions is one of the most important services we offer.

I look forward to meeting you and answering all your questions.

Invitation

October 29th, 2010 at 1:30PM we are having a Halloween Party and we want you to stop by and show off your best costume. Our party takes place in the lounge and dinning room. We have sweets and treats and the only thing missing is you.

There is nothing like a party atmosphere to let you see how full your life can be. Loneliness and isolation are never part of this community. This is a busy place, tea party on Wednesday and now a Halloween party on Friday.

Our November activity chart is full and December is already well developed. When you think about it, we offer a lot more than a lovely home and good food, we offer companionship and community. We think those are life’s most important gifts.

We hope you have time to come by and play with us.
